Python Pandas Pivot Table

This blog is going to be mostly helpful to folks who work with excel and databases. But, if you work with Excel and find yourself needing to deal with automation of pivot tables, you might also appreciate the technique.

When working with MySQL database, it was not an easy way for me to fetch the data and reshape it to a Pivot Table. I did duckduckgo, found ample of examples but most of them were hard to understand or not yielding the required output.

Python’s Pandas Pivot Table was the savior!! I followed below steps to fetch data from MySQL DB and generate a simple Pivot Table. Later this pivot table exported as an excel file and shared with stakeholders using slack.

• Create connection string to MySQL DB using PyMySQL
• Create a SQLAlchemy Engine (ORM)
• Write a Query statement to fetch data from DB
• Create a Pandas Dataframe directly from the query using SQLAlchemy
• Create a Pandas Pivot Table with required Index, Columns and Values
• Export data to excel or csv file using to_excel and to_csv respectively
• Share it to stakeholders via slack

IPPB – Say bye to long queue @ Indian Post Offices

IPBB (Indian Post Payments Bank) was inaugurated by PM Shri Narendra Modiji in Sep 2018.

I saw a tweet about it and never really bothered to open an account for myself until last week… Past Saturday, I went to the Post Office @ HSR BDA Complex to deposit to my daughters Sukanya Samrudhi Account(SSA). To my surprise there was a loooong queue moreover every customer was having 2-3 transactions. It was painful to stand in scorching sun, controlling my emotions and calmly waiting for my turn. It took about an hour and half and I noticed a board with a message says “Slow server connectivity, inconvenience regretted”. I asked officer, “sir, is there a way to transfer SSA to other banks so that I can avoid this pain in waiting in queue.

He was amused and said “haven’t you heard of Indian Post Payment Bank, why don’t you create an account and install mobile app to carry out all postal banking transactions instantly”.

I said I want to open the account right away. He took Aadhaar and PAN, no paper work! after the biometrics, I got my Customer ID and Account ID. Downloaded the app and configured the MPIN. I’m all set to experience the Digital Transformation of Postal Banking!

IPBB app is simple yet powerful packed with superb features… I thanked the officer for helping me out and said I won’t come again to stand in the long queue😊

I did IMPS from my salary account to this new account and then deposited to SSA. Here are the screenshots to transfer amount to postal accounts from the savings bank account.
